On the 8th November 2023 the ICO and European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing to cooperate on issues of mutual interest. The MoU is intended to reinforce the common mission of the ICO and EDPS to uphold individuals' data protection and privacy rights. In his latest blog, Clive Mackintosh, Founder of GDPR Rep, experts in GDPR Representative services digs into the details.

The MoU sets out a number of ways in which the ICO and EDPS will collaborate, including:

  • Sharing experiences and exchanging best practices on data protection policies, education, and training programs
  • Implementing joint research projects and joint publications
  • Exchanging information (excluding personal data) involving potential or ongoing investigations of organisations in the respective jurisdictions in relation to a contravention of personal data protection legislation.

This new collaboration demonstrates the commitment of the ICO and EDPS to work together to protect the data protection and privacy rights of individuals in the UK and the EU.

The signing of the MoU is particularly significant in light of the UK's exit from the European Union. Even though the UK is no longer a member of the EU, data continues to flow freely between the two jurisdictions. The MoU helps to ensure that the ICO and EDPS can continue to work together to protect the data protection and privacy rights of individuals in both the UK and the EU.
